A Dog’s Purpose?

From an email from my mother-in-law and found on Facebook…

A Dog’s Purpose?
(from a 6-year-old).

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, hi…s wife Lisa , and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker ‘s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ”I know why.”

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.

He said,”People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The Six-year-old continued,

”Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you’re not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

There comes a time in life, when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh, forget the bad, and focus on the good. So, love the people who treat you right. Think good thoughts for the ones who don’t. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is part of LIFE…Getting back up is LIVING…

Have a great life.

My Summer Wish List…

Here is a top 5 list of the things I want but just haven’t gotten around to buying…

#5

Since I already have a AppleTV which I use for work to demo Aerohive’s Bounjour Gateway, I think I need to take a look at other Media Devices to see what they have to offer. One that I have had my eye on for a while is the Roku 2 XS. As I see the disc (DVD & Blu-Ray) media becoming obsolete, this is the future of a sunday night movie.

#4

I have been waiting for the announcement of a 4G/LTE Apple iPhone since they teased America with the iPhone 4 that was 3G (I don’t know how many people I had to break the news to that their phone was not 4G/LTE even though it was an iPhone “FOUR”). Rumor has it the iPhone 5 (or what ever Apple’s clever marketing team will call it) due out in Sept/Oct of 2012 will be 4G/LTE which makes me happy. Now I can ditch my Motorola Droid 2 (even though it was a massive upgrade from my Blackberry of days ago) and move over to an iPhone… the 4G/LTE plus the features that were lacking in iOS 5, that should be in iOS 6 (features that are already in Android) will make me a happy camper. Now I just have to figure out which carrier to go with…

Since my wife and I purchased our first home together, I have always wanted to build things, the first thing I want to build is a planters box so that we can start to grow fresh herbs and vegetables. But to quickly build it (in the way i want to), I want to purchase a compound Miter Saw. This might be one of the first purchases on the list, as I will have some free weekends in the comings months. Luckily I have already done the plans for it…

Model of my Planters Box. (Look for a post on my project coming soon…)

I have lived this long with out this device, but after being given a Mac Book Pro and AppleTV for work, and the upcoming purchase of an iPhone 5, I find myself wanting to have this device. The new Apple iPad. (or the 7″ iPad rumored to be released with the iPhone 5). After talking with my friends, the iPad is a simple device for leisure browsing of the web and watching media. I will be excited to add this devices and move way from taking my Mac Book Pro to read my RSS feeds. Odds are this purchase will be for my wife, since she would use it the most, but I will still get to play with it when she is at work.

A surprise at the top spot, but this device saves me money, and I like saving money….Nest Learning Thermostat – developed by former Apple engineers, this device is cool (and when i say cool i mean it saves money by learning human patterns and sets temperature accordingly). Also with a web interface it allows you to remote manage it.

366.days

On April 16th, my wife and I celebrated our One year anniversary in the same city where I asked her to become my wife…

We stayed at the Grand Bohemian Hotel right across the street from the Biltmore House and on our anniversary we visited the house to explore the gardens… was hoping for more living flowers, but half wilted flowers will just have to do. Still amazing to see a house of that size.

Its been 10 years…

Its been over 10 years since June 6, 2001, the last of my HS days at Providence Senior High School (also my 18th birthday). How times flies… As I sit with a beer to my side and quickly approaching 30 years old, its good to reminiscence on the past because that is what makes you the person you are today. I have seen a lot of things, both good and bad, grown as a man (or at least I hope so) and have lived with no regrets.

The night we will never forget…

Our Trip to Asheville, NC
Trip – December 18th-21st, 2009
Proposal – Sunday, December 20, 2009

From the words of my beautiful wife

Well we kind of planned a last minute trip to visit the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC (America’s Largest Home, built by George Vanderbilt in 1913). This was the weekend of the “Blizzard of 2009″, even though we did not get a flake of snow in Charlotte while traveling West it was quite a different story. Luckily we left Saturday and the roads were clear but there was a good foot of snow on the ground when we arrived to the Biltmore. It was absolutely beautiful, it continued to flurry all weekend long.
